Stability of jets and wakes confined by compliant walls

چکیده
The absolute instability of jets and wake flows have often been studied when either unconfined in the flow normal direction, or confined by solid, impermeable walls. In this study, we confine compliant, flexible, walls that are only able to move direction. By using a local analysis, find wall compliance can significant effect on existing instabilities even induce new absolutely unstable modes.

Two-fluid jets and wakes
Similarity solutions for laminar two-fluid jets and wakes are derived in the boundary-layer approximation. Planar and axisymmetric fan jets as well as classical and momentumless planar wakes are considered. The interface between the immiscible fluids is stabilized by the action of gravity, with the heavier fluid, taken to be a liquid, placed beneath the lighter fluid. Velocity profiles for the ...
متن کاملDomain walls, wakes, and structure formation.
We consider a cosmological domain wall model where the dark matter interacts nongravitationally with the walls. We find that the dark matter is quickly {as early as z = 100}swept up in wakes and voids, with the wakes growing with time in a self-similar manner. The dark matter wakes, of order 5h Mpc thick today, tug on the baryons, which also trail behind in wakes of similar thickness. We find t...
متن کاملBroadband sound generation by confined turbulent jets.
Sound generation by confined stationary jets is of interest to the study of voice and speech production, among other applications. The generation of sound by low Mach number, confined, stationary circular jets was investigated. Experiments were performed using a quiet flow supply, muffler-terminated rigid uniform tubes, and acrylic orifice plates. A spectral decomposition method based on a line...
متن کاملSemiflexible Polymers in the Bulk and Confined by Planar Walls
Semiflexible polymers in solution under good solvent conditions can undergo an isotropic-nematic transition. This transition is reminiscent of the well-known entropically-driven transition of hard rods described by Onsager’s theory, but the flexibility of the macromolecules causes specific differences in behavior, such as anomalous long wavelength fluctuations in the ordered phase, which can be...
متن کاملConductances between confined rough walls
Twoand three-dimensional creeping flows and diffusion transport through constricted and possibly rough surfaces are studied. Asymptotic expansions of conductances are derived as functions of the constriction local geometry. The validity range of the proposed theoretical approximations is explored through a comparison either with available exact results for specific two-dimensional aperture fiel...
